Of course I just thought of one possibility that is quite common. When installing on an existing instance of SQL Server, be sure that it allows SQL Server logins in addition to Windows logins. In SQL Server Management Studio you can check this by loggin into the server and checking the Server Properties. On the Security tab be sure the "SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode" is selected.
